The Long Term Residency visa (LTR) program has been designed to attract ‘high-potential’ foreigners to Thailand. The LTR program offers qualifying applicants a visa that is valid for 10 years and a range of tax and non-tax benefits to the holders.

The LTR visa is available to the following 4 groups:

Eligible applicants of the LTR progrma will receive a visa which is valid for a period of 10 years.

Benefits

LTR holders are eligible for certain benefits such as income tax incentives, access to the Fast Track service at airports and the removal of the requirement for employers to hire four Thai citizens per foreigner.

Work Permit

Holders of the LTR will be eligible to receive a Digital Work Permit. This is currently not possible through the existing visas on offer.

Eligiblity criteria
The LTR visa is available to the following 4 groups: Rich global citizens, Wealthy retirees, Professionals working in Thailand, Highly skilled workers.
Financial Requirements
The LTR is available to 4 different groups and each of these groups has its own different set of financial requirements to satisfy.
Work Permit
LTR Visa holders working in Thailand may apply for their work permit right after receiving the visa or before starting work. After visa issuance, the applicant can apply for a work permit, taking 3-5 days.
Durée du processus
The whole process from beginning to receiving the work permit can take up to 60 days. A lot of follow ups and requests for additional information are expected during the application and qualification endorsment stage.
Leaving and re-entering Thailand
The Long Term Residency visa comes with a multiple re-entry permit. This means the holder and leave and re-enter Thailand for the duration of the visas validity.
One Stop Service Center
Holders of the LTR visa are eligible to deal with their immigration and work permit matters at the One Stop Service Center. Visa issuance and extensions plus work permits will be issued in a day using this service.

Can I leave and re-enter Thailand using an LTR visa?

Yes, the LTR visa comes with multiple re-entry permits, therefore, you can enter and leave Thailand as many times as you like during the validity of your Visa.

What are the benefits of the LTR visa in Thailand?

Holders of an LTR visa will be eligible for many attractive benefits which have been designed to make living in Thailand long term easier and less bureaucratic. These privileges include:

  • Special Personal Income Tax (PIT) rate of 17% for highly skilled professionals.  The current rate of PIT for normal employees is taxed at a progressive rate (from 5 to 35%).
  • Tax exempted for overseas income.
  • Permission to work in Thailand. Holders of the LTR will be eligible to receive a Digital Work Permit. 
  • Exempted from the employment  requirement ratio for employers to hire four Thai citizens per foreigner (eligible for a highly skilled professional who works for a Thai company in Thailand which is endorsed in the targeted industries).
  • Use of the Fast Track Service at qualifying airports.

If you have an extension of stay based on Employment of Conducting Business, you will need to go to the Immigration Office and cancel the extension. Upon cancellation, you will be given a 7 day stamp in your passport and be required to leave Thailand.

What is a Thai Work Permit?

A work permit in Thailand is a legal document which clearly states a foreigner’s position, occupation, or job description and the name and details of the Thai company they will be working for. It also acts as a license to perform a job/occupation for a foreigner in Thailand.

Can a foreigner start working after submitting an application for a work permit?

No, it is not possible to start working until a full work permit has been granted, unless the employee is working for a business promoted by the BOI (Board of investment).
